- A valid photo ID
- Social security cards for you, your spouse and all dependents
- All Tax forms for income, including:w-2, w-2g, 1099
- Tax information from day care
- A copy of last year's tax return
- Checking or savings documents like a personal check or statement (not a deposit slip) with bank routing number for direct deposit.
- Remember, your spouse must be present if filing jointly!
Who qualifies for VITA?
Single, married, divorced, student, employee -
In Montana, VITA sites can prepare basic returns for individuals and households that made $49,000 or less in 2010.
Basic tax returns include the following forms:
• Forms 1040 (including 1040-EZ and 1040-A) - Federal Tax Return
• Schedule A - Itemized Deductions
• Schedule B - Interest and Dividends
• Schedule C-EZ - Business Expenses, $5000 or less (no losses)
• Simple Schedule D - Capital Gains and Losses
• Schedule EIC - Earned Income Credit
• Schedule SE - Self Employment Tax
• Form 2441 - Child Care Expenses
• Form 8863 - Education Credits
• Montana Tax Return
• Some VITA sites can also prepare out-of-state, international or military returns.
What VITA can't do:
More complex returns cannot be prepared at a VITA site. This includes returns with the following forms:
• Schedule C - Business Expenses (and losses)
• Complex Schedule D - Capital Gains and Losses
• Schedule E - Supplemental Income
• Other forms for complex tax concerns
